Blog 1 Georges Cuvier

Georges Cuvier a scientist and naturalist, His contribution to scientific community is the developed paleontology and catastrophist. Which is the idea that each strata boundary corresponds to some catastrophic event.

The Bullet point that directly affect Georges Cuvier and Darwin the most is the bullet "If the environment change, the traits that are helpful or adaptive to that environment will be different." Since Georges Cuvier idea explain that a catastrophic event help involve in evolution it would be best to support Darwin idea of evolution. The catastrophic event that happen toward environment present the issue of natural selection because the strongest are able to adapt and survive pass that catastrophic event.

I believe that Darwin cannot developed his theory of natural selection without the influence of Georges Cuvier ideas. Since if Darwin does not include the idea of environment into natural selection then that would really defeat the purpose of the natural selection theory.

Lastly as to how did the church attitude affect Darwin and his book On the Origin of Species. would be that the church didn't accept Darwin ideas and mention that it should be separated between religion and evolution to be taught.

  1. A more complete explanation of Cuvier's work would have been better in your first paragraph. What is a "strata boundary"? How do catastrophic events related to Cuvier's work? Did Cuvier support the concept of evolution? How did new organisms arise, according to Cuvier?

I agree with your choice of bullet point, since Cuvier explained extinction events based upon apparent catastrophic events. But the question of Cuvier's opinion of evolution is raised again in this section.

It is possible that Darwin wouldn't have developed his theory without Cuvier, but keep in mind that many scientists were also working on these fossils. I'm not sure if Cuvier himself was that crucial to Darwin.

Darwin withheld publishing his ideas for 20 years, so the church didn't even know about them and certainly the issue of education wasn't an issue at that time. So why did Darwin delay so long? What repercussions was he concerned about?
